How to Improve Photos by Guiding the Eye

Posted date:  May 1, 2014  |  No comment

You can instantly improve the quality and appearance of your photo by simply guiding the eye – you can learn how to use paths, lines and direction to develop your photography skills.

Whenever you look at a photograph, you are naturally drawn to a particular area – and to ensure that viewers of your photographs are focusing on the right points, you can visually create a path for their eye to follow your direction. It should be noted that this may not work in every circumstance.

How can you use and create a path? One way is to use the natural elements – lines in crop fields, fences, streams, walking paths, roads, etc. You can also use blur to guide the eye to a particular focal point – for example, using shadow depth to make the subject pop. When you are dealing with moving objects, you must carefully consider the direction in which they are heading. If the object is off-center and heading out of the frame, this will lead the viewer’s eye away from the image and be ultimately frustrating to the viewer – gearing the objects toward the center will ultimately provide for a more visually enticing shot, and happier viewers (and a happier photographer).
