Saul Leiter: Color Photography Legend Dies

Posted date:  December 7, 2013  |  No comment

Saul Leiter, one of the legendary American color photographer and artist, passed away at the age of 89 in New York City. His rise to fame was not that easy as he had to toil away from the limelight in the initial years. Only during the later part of his career, he started getting accolades for his work. He started taking New York street photographs, and in particular, the region surrounding his East Village apartment. He began shooting in color films in the year 1948, more than two decades before color photography went commercial. In an interview to PDN contributor Jane Gottlieb in 2006, he remarked that he didn’t consider color photography at that time as inferior to the traditional black and white photography.

Leiter was practically unknown in the art circuit till the 1990s. In one of his interviews, he pointed out that he was happy to stay away from the limelight as that could give him the freedom to work at his own pace and talking to his like minded friends about the evolution of art. Leiter was born in Pittsburgh in the year 1923. From a very young age, he showed a keen interest in painting. He pursued career as appointed in New York City before becoming a photographer for popular magazines like Esquire and Elle.
