Tips for Bad Weather Landscape

Whether amateur or professional, most photographers think that a cloudy or rainy day can spoil their outdoor photo plans. From a photographic point of view, there is a concern that the outside light may be somewhat diffused and provide little or no contrast for the image resulting in dull photographs. However, during the season of Autumn, a grey or dark sky can provide a good background for the shades of reds and yellows that nature displays.

Wide shots of a blazed autumn colored forest canopy or a smaller shot of a tree or leaf can be enhanced by the interest added with a grey sky backdrop, and the use of a ND Grad camera filter. It is important to be prepared to shoot at the exact time the sun does peek through and add a stream of light for the perfect shot. This can sometimes involve setting up in wet conditions so rain gear protection is important.

Using manual camera settings can produce more vibrant color than automatic balance. Additional features can be fine tuned during post production for beautiful landscape photographs even on a cloudy day.
