Tips on Environmental Portrait Photography

Posted date:  September 27, 2013  |  No comment

Environmental portraits have nothing to do with environmentalism or other such matters. They’re all about people and the environment they live in. Whether that be other cultures, subcultures, or people who have interesting professions or activities, there are many opportunities to explore environmental photography. The most important part of environmental photography is getting to know your subjects. Your intended goal is to get a snapshot of their life, and not create a scene just for the scene’s sake. For this to work, you need to know about their daily lives, especially what might make an interesting photo. You should avoid incredibly complex backgrounds, but some background details are necessary, otherwise it will make the person seem too distant from their environment. You can use a larger aperture to blur the background a little, if you find that it is still too distracting. You don’t want a plain, sterile backdrop, but you want something which allows the focus to be on the individual. Your subjects should wear something comfortable, which doesn’t distract them too much, as you want them to act somewhat normally. Ideally, you’d like them to look and act naturally. Then, you’ll have photographs of real personal experiences and new insight into their way of life.
