Tips for Black and White Landscape

Black and white photographs might seem easy, but they can be very difficult when it comes to separating different portions of a scene. If you do not take this into consideration, images will appear flat, nothing will stand out, and they will be unappealing. You want to select a foreground which has well defined shapes, and you need to separate your scenes with brightness and contrast rather than color. An easy-to-notice shape is the best thing to photograph, as it will make the image look less flat. Digital cameras often include black-and-white shooting options, but if you are actually shooting with a camera which takes colors photos, you should use image editing software to do the conversion from color to black-and-white. This will allow more control in how colors are converted. Different colors should correspond with different tones in the image, for crisp well-defined borders for all objects in the scene. You can use S-Curve techniques in image editing software to adjust the color balance, as well as adjusting the contrast settings. There is also the Dodge & Burn tool in most image manipulation programs, which will let you manually get rid of stubborn flat areas which don’t stand out enough.
