Tips and Advice for Storm Photography

Posted date:  September 27, 2013  |  No comment

Storms can be exciting, and going out into the middle of a really big storm to get some cool photographs can be a rewarding experience. However, you have to consider the dangers of lightning before heading out. Debris from really serious weather conditions such as tornadoes and hurricanes can be hazardous, and storm chasing is a dangerous hobby. If you’re trying to shoot a powerful bolt of lightning, you want to use a long exposure time (30s is common) to ensure that you will actually capture the scene. To determine when lightning is about to strike, you want to reverse the process of counting between lightning and thunder. Time how long it is after lightning strikes that you hear thunder, and then count again after the next peal of thunder. You’ll want to set your camera up on a tripod after judging the direction the storm is moving, use a small aperture (f/16 or f/22), and a very long exposure time. You should cover the lens with a small paper card after opening the shutter, and then remove the card when you think the lightning is about to strike. This allows for a faster response time than trying to get the shutter open. However, it can be tricky and requires a bit of trying to get right. Afterwards, you should be more experienced and easily able to determine when the lightning will strike.
