Safari Photography – A Beginner’s Guide

Posted date:  September 27, 2013  |  No comment

Safari photography is interesting for many new photographers who want to shoot natural scenes. It can be more interesting than still life photographs, but it requires a different list of equipment. Instead of normal lenses, you’ll want at least a 300mm zoom lens. You can use a long zoom lens for almost any subjects, not just ones which are far away, so it will also reduce the amount of camera lenses and equipment you’ll have to pack around. Avoid compact cameras, full DSLRs will provide a better shooting speed. The Canon EOS 70D is one such camera which can shoot at 7fps and offers an advanced auto-focus system. Keeping your camera secured from potential thieves is important when shooting in crowded areas such as zoos and parks, as professional quality cameras are easy targets. Keeping it free of dust is another consideration, as it can get in the camera and can damage the equipment. If you’re traveling in a Jeep, you want to ensure that you pack only minimal support equipment as space is limited. You could carry a small monopod, but it is preferable to just use the support rails of the vehicle to steady the camera. You’ll also want a lens hood, or otherwise have to shade the lens with your hand to prevent glare and improve contrast. A polarizing filter will also help to reduce glare effects.
