Photographing the Canals

Posted date:  September 27, 2013  |  No comment

Canals were one of the earliest methods of transporting goods efficiently, as ships made for better bulk transport. They can make great photo opportunities, whether the canals are in prosperous areas or flowing through a derelict backdrop. There are canals in many coastal regions, and many opportunities to get a few shots when you’re traveling. Even if your main subject is not the canals or surrounding areas, you might find it interesting to spend a few hours there in order to broaden your photographic experience. As canals are almost always surrounded by public walkways, you can spend several hours walking around trying to get good shots without distracting anyone. You should always bring a wide angle and a telephoto lens when shooting in or around canals, as you can get great shots of perspective as well as focus in on details which seem to pop out. You’ll also want a polarising filter, in case the reflections of water pose too many difficulties. However, reflections can add atmosphere to a photograph as well, so try a few shots without the filter if the reflections are not too distracting. The lock gates of a canal, as well as other surrounding structures help to expose the symmetry of the long, straight lanes of water. Try to get some interesting details in along the paths to the vanishing points.

A vantage provides advantage Have you seen professional photographers carrying around small ladders at weddings? It’s because the vantage matters.
