Photographing an Air Show

Posted date:  September 27, 2013  |  No comment

Air shows allow for some amazing action photography. You should pack a long zoom lens, but if you don’t have one available, you should stick to smaller air shows where the action is closer to the crowd. One important factor you need to consider is shutter speed. If your shutter speed is too fast, there will be no motion blur in propeller-driven aircraft. Thus, the planes will look like they’re just hanging in the air statically. For jet aircraft, you will have to have a quick hand to track the faster moving planes which tend to climb quickly in the sky. But you can use the jet trails and vapor clouds to your advantage in composing scenes. Sometimes, the pilots even use them in their shows, for instance skywriting. Likewise for aerobatic stunts. If the air show you are attending is large or of a military nature, there may be more than just planes to capture on film. For instance, there are often really amazing effects such as simulated bombing runs, where enormous amounts of fuels are detonated creating visual scenes like mushroom clouds. You’ve got to have a quick and steady hand (or use a tripod), but you can achieve some amazing shots.
