Insect Photography

Posted date:  September 27, 2013  |  No comment

If you’re interested in macro photography, insects are one of the greatest subjects to start. Tiny bees and wasps make great subjects as they flit around on flowers, but take precautions if you’re allergic to a sting. Most likely, your photography will not bother them. You can take different approaches to finding your subjects. The first is to sit and wait at individual flowers and get ready to snap a shot. This is the best option if you have a specific flower in mind, or if there are an enormous number of bees buzzing around. Long, trumpet like flowers are the best for things like bumblebees with large fuzzy behinds. Short flowers will allow you to get a better angle of the front of a bee. You need a very fast shutter speed and a small aperture of at least f/22 or smaller. This will help you get a reasonable depth of field. However, a flash will help lighten some of the dark areas, and is reasonably easy to get to work properly for small apertures and fast shutter speeds. Unless it’s very bright, you want your background to be very close to the insect, otherwise it might look like you were shooting at nighttime. With these tips, you can be photographic insects like a pro in no time.
