Just about everyone has a digital camera these days but most people don’t really know how to use them correctly. This means photos turn out okay but not as good as they could. One of the key aspects of digital photography is setting the white balance. If you want a photo to turn out with colors that are accurate and true to life, you need to set the white balance first. Otherwise, your photos will end up looking a little too blue, a little too red, or a little too yellow. Luckily, it’s actually very simple to do this. You just need to follow a few straightforward procedures.

One thing you need to understand first of all is that even though objects or people can look completely normal through the viewfinder, they can still come out looking the wrong colors in the photo. The lighting in the room has a major impact on this. The coolness or warmth of light is what determines whether or not a photo looks too cool or blue or too warm or yellow. Specifically, fluorescent lighting results in a blue look and incandescent lighting adds a yellow look.

The lighting in the room is the lighting in the room, right? Unless you invest in lights, you don’t have much choice in this situation, right? Wrong. You can change the lighting’s effect on the subject of your photos by setting the white balance.

This is something you will have to do because the eye simply can’t catch it on its own. Your eyes adjust for different temperatures of light automatically but the camera won’t. You have to manually change what the camera views as the color white so that it’s true to life and not true to whatever the lighting is. Make sense? If the lighting is cool, you have to set the white balance to warm. If the lighting is warm, you need to set the balance to cool. Sounds pretty simple, right?
