Today, we’re continuing where we left off in discussing how to take excellent photos of waterfalls. So far, we’ve offered up some photography tips that we hope you’ll find useful. What makes capturing waterfalls so difficult is the element of movement. The cascading water is hard to capture properly. You can go for a static look or a blurred look but both require perfect set ups and skills. Hopefully after finishing this segment you will learn what you need to do to capture it right.

Last time, we were talking about how to minimize the light that for a camera on a slow shutter speed. This can prevent overexposure in these cases. First of all, be selective in the time of day you decide to photograph the waterfall. Very early morning or the late afternoon around sunset is best. Or, opt to photograph the waterfall on a cloudy day. Another option is to use a filter. Filters minimize the amount of light that can enter the camera. We typically recommend a polarizing filter because it cuts down on light and reduces reflections.

Another option is a neutral density filter which is sort of like covering the lens and blocking out the brightest sources of light. Using a slow shutter speed to get that fantastic blur is something you can do anytime of day regardless of how bright it is out. That’s why you should use aperture priority mode. You want to use a very small aperture like f/36. Picking a small aperture your will automatically switch your camera to a slow shutter speed so you’ll see the water blur or be substantially more so than you did in the initial shot you took on auto like we discussed in the last post.

The last of our landscape photography tips today for shooting waterfalls is to select a low ISO. This means that the camera itself will be sensitive to light and the shutter will remain open for longer. This way, you’ll get the blurred image of the water falling without any blur on other areas of the photo or any noise.
