Food Photography Tips: How to Represent Dishes the Best

Posted date:  November 30, 2012  |  No comment

One of the most exciting photography subjects is, funnily enough, completely static and inanimate. That subject is food. It’s vibrant and colorful and when photographed well, leaps off the page or screen. It can entice people into enjoying a good meal or sell products. It’s powerful stuff.

That’s why we’re offering some food photography tips today to help you learn a bit more about how to properly capture food on camera to fully entice the viewer.

First of all, you need to double check your colors. That is, start from a white balance. Make sure the colors are correct and true to life. If the colors are off, the food won’t look right and you could repel the viewer rather than pull them in. Think about the best food photography you’ve seen: it’s bright, vivid, and appetizing, right? Keep that in mind.

On that same note, lighting is essential. Ideally, you’ll be shooting food in a studio with a softbox, but if that’s not available, try photographing in front of a clean window. You may wish to cover it with white sheet to soften the light a bit. You’ll still get a similar effect as you would in a studio but natural light has a lovely look, so you may like that even better. That’s probably one of our biggest tips on this photography blog: mind your lighting!

Another thing you need to think about when photographing food is the surface on which you’re filming. Make sure it’s dust free and clean it well before setting up your shot. Sure, a stray hair or smudge may wind up in your photos but you want to save yourself as much post-production as possible by cleaning up the physical space first. Who needs Photoshop when you can manually create the look you want?

Another of our food photography tips is to keep the background in mind. The dish you’re photographing shouldn’t be the only thing in frame. Try to include something else in the frame like a knife and fork, plates, a wine glass, tablecloths, or scattered fruit. You get the idea.

Try to think of the big picture when setting up a shot. Would this food look better where the viewer can see the whole thing, or would a tight closeup serve it better? Mind the angle and set up as well. These are more things that will save you a lot of time in post production so really evaluate the composition of the shot before you take it.

One last tip from this photography blog for today? Don’t be afraid of ingredients. Often, what goes into making a dish is just as interesting as the finished dish.

Since the advent of digital cameras and smartphones and people clicking away while talking a belief has grown up slowly – you can’t go wrong with a digital camera. May be, at least with digital cameras there are far fewer disasters, but you can go wrong, because the images may not come out professional enough. These articles mentions some professional photography tips, and remember not all of them are about cameras, or holding cameras, but they can help you get those great looking shots. A vantage provides advantage Have you seen professional photographers carrying around small ladders at weddings? It’s because the vantage matters. Just a little difference of angle of taking the photo from top or from below, can change how the photo ultimately looks – because it is […]
