When seeking out a destination to photograph, the ocean and coast are compelling subjects. However, they require specific techniques in order to capture fully. The sand can be perfectly smooth or textured. The water maybe still or may feature crashing waves. There maybe cliffs or rocky outcroppings. It may be sunny or cloudy. There are a lot of factors to consider.

When searching for photography tips for photographing the ocean, there are a few key things we need to keep in mind. We’re going to discuss those things here today.

First of all, you should look for areas that you can photograph with many reflections. Reflections automatically brighten an image and provide multiple focal points for the viewer. So, when you’re shooting a sunset, you’re not just shooting the horizon and the sky. You’re shooting the reflection of the sky in the water, which doubles the brilliance of the subject. The vibrant colors in the sky like pink and orange will be reflected in the water, adding more depth and more interest. This is actually one of the most important things you can focus on when photographing bodies of water or the shoreline in general.

When shooting the ocean, your eye is likely on the horizon. While that is definitely a worthy focal point, it can be to your detriment to leave your focus there all the time. Depth is important and including a focal point in the foreground can make the shoreline all the more interesting. For instance, you may photograph the ocean from a cliff so you can capture tide pools in the foreground. Just a thought.

Since most of your ocean photographs will deal with the horizon, make sure its straight. That is, it should never be angled because your camera was tilted. Use the horizon as a straight line for lining up your photographs.

One of the most important landscape photography tips we can offer you is to think beyond the big picture sometimes. That is, don’t be afraid to capture the little details if you think that will lend itself to a better photo. Granules of sand, shells, or even a closeup of the rolling tide are worthy detail subjects you should consider capturing them. So, even if you’re going to the beach for wide angle photos, one of the best landscape photography tips we can give you is to be sure to bring your macro lens along, just in case.

Another of the photography tips we’re offering up today has to do with the speed of the shutter. Shutter speed can make all the difference in the quality of the photo. If there is mist over the sea at dawn, you can make it come alive by using a slower shutter speed. You’ll infuse the appearance of movement into the photograph, bringing it to life. This is a strictly tripod kind of shot so don’t try to free hand it lest you be disappointed.
