Any image that is taken from very close to the subject is usually referred to as Close up photography. If a face is all you can see in the frame of a picture, it would be a called Close up photograph. If only a person’s eyes in the picture, this would be even closer but it would still be called a Close up photograph.

There are certain subjects that fall directly into the close up category like insects, coins and flowers, etc. These images fall in the frame most of the time. The term Macro Photography is also used to define this type of pictures. This term is most often used for images that are taken from macro lenses. These types of lenses allow the camera to get real close to the image, which is difficult to achieve with standard lenses. Both these terms mean the same thing, only difference macro lens can give you a clearer viewpoint.

Pictures of flowers and insects should not be mistaken for Close up photographs unless the whole frame is filled with a flower or insect. Most cameras let you get closer to an object but if you want to get even further closer, a filter or a macro lens is used. With their help you can get the camera to focus closer. They, however, do not magnify the subject in any way.

It is the SLRs that get preferred when it comes to Close up photography. This is so because what you see through the viewfinder is what will be seen in the image. Cameras with separate viewfinders make close up images more difficult to frame. The viewfinder lens view is different than the view visible by the picture taking camera. This becomes really apparent when you take close proximity images.

There are many accessories that can be attached to the SLR camera for taking images closer to the subject. These are close up filters, lens bellows, extension tubes and true macro lenses. Even though now macros setting or mode facility is available in the cameras, the best results can only be found with specifically designed macro lenses.

Finally, three simple steps to close ups:

  1.  Adjust the lens to its best ability by manual setting and then re-adjust the focus of the image before clicking it.
  2. Apertures of f11 and f16 will give you the best possible results.
  3.  Use support when clicking close-up photographs.
